The counters are all poured in place concrete with powdered dye added to the mix to achieve the intended color. The process requires over a month to complete. It begins with wood forms. In the vertical areas, the forms are lined with smooth plastic laminate so that the concrete will be naturally smooth. The tops are troweled smooth. The forms are removed the next day, and the surfaces are kept moist and protected. Three to four weeks later the top surfaces are wet-ground to expose the desired amount of aggregate. Repeated grinding with progressively finer diamond pads yields a surface almost as smooth as marble or granite. Some of the detailing juxtaposes rustic areas with the very fine.
